CHAPTER FIVE

MARGOT WAS DRIVING TO A CATERING JOB WHEN HER PHONE BEEPED. IT WAS A message from Mike. “U free?”

Well, shit, Margot thought. She’d missed his message a few days before when she was on the phone with Brad, and since then Mike had been tied up again with some training exercise. She felt like it had been ages since they’d talked.

At a red light, she typed, “Working tonight, but keep me company? XXOO”

His response came quickly. “U BET!”

Then the car behind Margot pounded on its horn and she saw the traffic light had turned green, so she flipped off the driver behind her and proceeded on toward Rockville Center.

So many of her conversations with Mike took place this way. She’d be at an event, or baking, or making deliveries, and he’d be coming off a shift, or on a break, or en route somewhere. And they’d talk by text message. Her thumb had gotten nimble, though her fat fingers still bumped the wrong keys sometimes.

“What’s cooking?” he asked.

She typed “Made choc cake” with her left hand while her right hand steered. But then she realized she’d missed her street, so she dropped the phone on her lap and cut into a parking lot to make a U-turn. “Shit,” she said to herself and the phone.

“MMM,” the phone replied.

The house was lit up, and through the front window she could see that the cocktail hour had started. It was a rehearsal dinner for forty. A friend of Margot’s was doing the dinner, and Margot was providing dessert. She had this kind of arrangement with a number of caterers in the area. It was a good deal. They booked the job and hired the staff. All she did was show up with the sweets.

There was a spot in the driveway set off with orange cones, and while one of the servers walked down to move them for her, she typed, “Sorry I couldn’t talk the other day. You doing okay?”

“Indeed,” came the quick reply. “Becoming quite a Poker Champ here.”

“Oh yeah?” she typed. Then she waved her thanks to the server, pulled into the spot, and turned off the ignition.

“Three wins in a row,” Mike had written.

Margot smiled. “Watch out, New York,” she typed, before slipping the phone into her apron.

The server who’d moved the cones was waiting to help her unload the van. He was new, handsome. Looked all of nineteen. He said his name was Chad. Margot introduced herself and smiled.

The garage had been set up as a staging area for the dinner. Two servers were plating risotto and carrots on two long tables, and a third table had been set up for her. Chad and Margot carried the cakes to the table, and she continued to the kitchen with her pot. Her friend Zoe, the chef and manager, had an empty burner waiting. “Tasty,” Margot said, eyeing the salmon and then young Chad who passed behind them.

Margot sent a quick note as she walked back to the garage:
